Health & Safety Matters

Workers' Memorial Day is 28 April

Unions expect a record number of reps and safety campaigners to get involved in Workers' Memorial Day 2005 on 28 April.

This year's theme is "employer accountability" and unions are organising a range of activities, from a minute's silence at work to public demonstrations.

The day's purpose is to "remember the dead and fight for the living". A TUC briefing says this can best be done by "building trade union organisation and campaigning for stricter enforcement with higher penalties for breaches of health and safety laws".

The briefing is available online at www.tuc.org.uk/h_and_s/tuc-9360-f0.cfm
