Existing school support staff won’t lose out

A “slow motion” pay cut for school support staff at Swindon Borough Council has been avoided under an agreement negotiated by the GMB general union.

The council’s proposed changes for teaching assistants, caretakers, librarians and admin staff would have meant them taking an extra two to four years to reach the top of their pay scales. In what was a complicated scenario, the union said some staff would be losing up to £1,765 a year.

However, after balloting on the proposals, the union and the council have now been able to agree that no existing staff will lose any money: all eligible staff recruited prior to 31 August 2016 will progress by two pay scale increments a year instead of one, which means that there will be no financial hit for them.

Steps have also been taken to ensure that academy school staff are not adversely affected.
