Recruitment and organisation news

CWU targets new areas for members

“Recruitment and organising must be at the heart of everything we do,” according to Andy Kerr, deputy general secretary of the CWU communication workers’ union.

In “an important message” to members covering a wide range of issues, Kerr said that the next 12 months would see the union campaigning in areas where the union does not have recognition, as well as for increased membership density in areas where it does. It would be seeking to recruit in Virgin Media, Vodafone, Sky, PlusNet and “especially within EE” after its takeover by British Telecom.

Kerr said organising was especially important in the area of youth and that the CWU wanted to find out how young workers view the outlook rather than the union telling them how it sees things. He said young workers would be the focus of this year’s CWU Contact Centre Action Week.
