Link boardroom pay with safety outcomes

The safety professionals’ body, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), has responded to a government green paper on corporate governance reform by arguing for executive pay and bonuses to be linked to a company’s health and safety performance.

It also proposed that a non-executive director should be designated responsible for ensuring that a company’s employees have a voice on health and safety and says there should be explicit directors’ health and safety duties, something the TUC and unions have long argued for.

“In general these are welcome proposals, although it should not be seen as being just about rewarding good employers,” said the TUC. “We also have to ensure that there are clear and strong penalties for those people at the top who oversee organisations that flaunt health and safety laws. The positive duty on directors is one step towards that and we would strongly endorse that.”
