Cinram job cuts

A redundancy package for workers at the Cinram multimedia distribution company who recently lost its major contract with Universal Pictures to rivals Sony DADC has been negotiated by the Unite general union.

The terms of the deal are confidential, but Unite says that 29 workers will be transferred to Sony DADC under the TUPE regulations, while another 81 affected staff have accepted a redundancy package hammered out by the union.

Unite regional officer Marie Hall said: “The message that should go out is that belonging to a union is highly beneficial to workers. Without Unite’s legal expertise and employment knowledge, it is very unlikely that the 29 workers would have been transferred to Sony and the remaining workers would have been left without any redundancy payment at all.”

A further 111 Unite members at the Cinram warehouse operation continue to be employed by Cinram but, without a buyer for the company, Cinram will have to go into administration.
