Unite want mobile crane testing

The Unite general union is calling on transport secretary Chris Grayling to introduce compulsory testing and new regulations to ensure that mobile cranes are roadworthy.

Mobile cranes are currently exempt from requiring an MoT, but the Department for Transport has recently announced that it will require mobile cranes on an HGV chassis to undergo MoTs.

However, the union says that most mobile cranes are the all-terrain type and will continue to be exempt from MoT testing as many are too large to fit into a testing centre. While it understands that size considerations are an issue, Unite is nevertheless calling for compulsory testing, as well as the introduction of a tachograph system to improve safety and reassure both drivers and other road users.
