Green stuff from food workers’ union

After moving the historic climate change motion at last year’s TUC Congress, the BFAWU food workers’ union is adapting its health and safety reps’ role to include an environmental aspect as they become safety, health and environmental (SHE) reps.

A new Green stuff newsletter will contain regular updates as the union develops its environmental strategy. The first issue is now online and includes examples of best practice from across the food sector. For example, Aunt Bessie’s in Hull has a wind turbine generating a fifth of its energy, and is half way to its 2025 target of making 100% of its packaging from recycled packaging and/or recyclable/compostable materials.

Manor Carlton/Premier Foods has set targets for each site to reduce energy, water, waste and carbon dioxide emissions. They have trained 54 environmental champions, including a number of BFAWU reps and branch secretaries who have attended a three-day accredited course.
