Concern over health and safety in disruptive Brexit

The Unite general union warned the government that its failure to consult over Brexit planning risks the safety of road users and is likely to make the expected disruption caused by a disorderly exit far worse.

The union, which represents over 50,000 lorry drivers, said there were still unanswered questions concerning welfare facilities for drivers, provision for rest breaks and emergency measures to alter the rules on drivers’ hours. Unite said it had not received information that drivers’ health, safety and welfare will be assured.

“Drivers have been left in the dark about what is planned and what is expected of them,” said Unite national officer Adrian Jones. “Over 250 people are killed in road accidents every year. Drivers being forced to work additional hours who are denied proper breaks and sleep are a danger to themselves and other road users.”

The focus on Brexit disruption has been the flow of goods entering the UK via Dover, but Unite says delays will affect the entire distribution network, resulting in additional stress and problems for lorry drivers across the UK, not just those on international journeys.
