Consultation on fire safety design in schools

The Department for Education (DfE) has launched a call for evidence on how non-statutory guidance, Building Bulletin 100: design for fire safety in schools (BB100), should be updated.

The DfE says the call for evidence is aimed at ensuring that the guidance to those who build schools is fit for purpose and aligns with the Ministry of Housing Communities and Local Government’s wider review of fire safety. It comes ahead of a consultation and thorough review.

The NEU teaching union set out the case for sprinklers in schools earlier this year. It said that because BB100 is not compulsory, it is concerned that those responsible for building schools will ignore the principles within the guidance. The union reported a “significant drop-off” in schools being fitted with sprinklers since 2010.
