Air pollution app

The British Safety Council (BSC) is offering unions free access to its Canairy air pollution app for London-based reps and members.

The mobile phone app draws on emissions data from the London Air Quality Network (LAQN) based at King’s College London. The network receives data on emissions that is modelled to produce hourly updates on the main air pollutants – nitrogen dioxide, ozone, carbon monoxide and particulates. With the phone’s GPS, the app uses this emissions data to calculate air pollution exposures at the street level.

“It aims to highlight outdoor workers’ exposure to harmful levels of air pollution and help to drive positive change for workers as part of the BSC Time to Breathe campaign,” TUC health and safety policy officer Laurie Heselden explained.

The public and commercial services PCS union is recruiting volunteers to use the app.

“We will use the data captured to put together a bargaining agenda and seek to make positive changes to reduce the effects of air pollution on our members in London,” PCS head of health and safety Tracy Edwards told Workplace Report.
