Last stop for London bus conductors

The jobs of 900 London bus conductors are set to disappear with the phasing out of Routemaster vehicles and the introduction of 'pay before you board' ticket sales.

The T&G general union says the switch away from conductors will be phased in. Retraining will be provided and most of those losing their jobs will have the opportunity to work as drivers or revenue protection officers.

The old-style buses' days are numbered because they don't meet the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act.

A T&G spokesperson told Labour Research: "We are more or less resigned to this happening". The union acknowledges that the bus industry in London is growing, with over a thousand vacancies for drivers.

New single deck "bendy" buses, already introduced on certain routes, are expected to benefit people with mobility impairments, and those carrying luggage or pushing buggies. More ticket machines are being installed to allow for pre-payment.
