Pay review disappoints teaching unions

School teachers in England and Wales are expected to receive increases of 2.9% from April following the publication of the School Teachers' Pay Review Body recommendations.

Additional resources have been concentrated on London with a new inner-London pay spine and 10% on outer and fringe allowances.

Teaching unions have condemned the settlement, arguing that it is below the trend for the rest of the public sector and will do nothing for recruitment and retention.

NUT general secretary Doug McEvoy attacked the government's "contempt" for qualified teachers.

* Review body recommendations for the Armed Forces include a basic award of 3.2%, while the Senior Salaries Review Body has recommended 2.25% on senior civil servants' pay bands and pay ranges for senior military staff and 2.75% on judicial salaries.
