Inflation remains steady

Inflation was steady in January at 2.9%, according to National Statistics. Cost cutting in clothing and footwear before Christmas offset the inflationary effect of dearer petrol.

The underlying rate, excluding mortgage interest payments, was also unchanged at 2.7%.
