Government ponders paid parental leave

Paid parental leave is being considered by trade and industry secretary Stephen Byers, who is said to be sympathetic to the idea. Rights to take up to 13 weeks' unpaid leave during a child's first five years were introduced last year following a European Union directive. The Commons social security select committee has recommended the introduction of paid leave to benefit lower income families.
