Bill Speirs retires from STUC

Bill Speirs has stepped down from the post of STUC general secretary after working for the organisation for nearly 30 years.

He was elected general secretary in 1998 and took the decision to retire after a period of ill health.

"On taking the top job I told everyone I would only do it for five years, but have been in post for eight," he said. "It was only during my recent recuperation that I realised I had given, to what is a demanding role, three years more than initially planned."

Spiers said he had immensely enjoyed his time at the STUC but it was time for a fresh challenge, adding: "Having been fortunate to have established contacts with trade unions and human rights activists across the globe, I aim to devote my energies to build on the interest I have developed in this field."

STUC general council chairperson Katrina Purcell described Speirs as a champion for working people in Scotland. "He has won respect and affection from trade unionists for his commitment to social justice," she said.

The STUC represents members from 46 affiliated trade unions.
