CWU launches university degree for its activists

A new university degree programme has been developed for activists from the CWU communication workers' union.

The Bachelor of Arts course in Trade Union and Labour Studies is offered at London Metropolitan University, and is designed for activists who have progressed through the CWU's core education programme. The union says the course is unique in offering health and safety as a specialist option.

The course's first intake of 35 activists began their studies last month, and were congratulated by CWU general secretary Billy Hayes.

"Don't let anyone tell you that studying at this level is somehow not relevant to what we do in the workplace," Hayes said. "It is equally important to understand how and why trade unions exist and operate as to understand an agreement or a procedure."

The part-time, six-year course is offered through distance learning and short residential sessions, with the CWU paying course fees and travel and accommodation costs.
