Pregnant teachers get more leave

Camden council in north London has improved maternity leave entitlements for the borough's teachers.

In a deal backdated to the beginning of this year, pregnant teachers will get 12 weeks' leave on full pay - three times the previous level. The council has recommended that the borough's voluntary-aided schools introduce the same entitlement.

Kevin Courtney, branch secretary of the NUT teachers' union, described the deal as "very positive". He added: "We are confident this will contribute to the recruitment and retention of teachers, and help improve education prospects for pupils in Camden schools."
