M&S work experience scheme helps parents

Parents who wish to return to employment are being helped by a work experience scheme run by Marks & Spencer.

The pilot scheme, known as Marks & Start, gives the opportunity of work experience and training to six target groups including parents, people with disabilities, the young unemployed and the homeless.

Participants get a two-week work experience placement at a Marks & Spencer store or office combined with a three-day work preparation package.

The scheme is backed by a range of organisations including lone-parent charity One Parent Families and support and advice organisation Parentline Plus, which will assist with the training. As well as offering practical advice on tax credits and childcare options, the scheme will offer help with building up self-confidence and boosting employability skills.

Kate Green, Director of One Parent Families, said: "This is a bold and really exciting programme from Marks & Spencer, which recognises the many hurdles facing parents who want to be back in the workforce.

"We're delighted to be able to take part because it means we can offer direct, expert help to parents with the aim of smoothing their transition to work."
