TUC region launches equality initiatives

The TUC's Northern region has launched two initiatives designed to promote race and disability equality at work.

The region has published a new guide All different - all equal: tackling racism in the north east, designed to equip trade unionists and local communities with information on challenging racism in the workplace and the wider society.

It tackles some of the myths about immigration and asylum seekers, arguing that improvements to the regional economy are dependent on all individuals and communities regardless of race or religion.

Regional secretary Kevin Rowan said the guide rebuts some of the lies spread about immigrants and asylum seekers. He said: "Without migrant workers and the contribution of ethnic minority communities, our vital public services would soon collapse."

Disability forum

The region has also launched a new disability forum, bringing together trade unionists from the north east and Cumbria. The forum aims to raise awareness among unions of the importance of disability rights in all areas of employment and public policy.

According to the region, the forum will bring together activity and best practice and act as "a vital conduit for enabling the Northern TUC to strengthen its overall approach to disability issues."
