New guidance on RPE

The HSE has revised its guidance on the safe use of respiratory protective equipment (RPE).

RPE is designed to protect the wearer against inhalation of potentially hazardous substances in workplace air.

Respiratory protective equipment at work: a practical guide includes a new "RPE selector" tool, which takes users through a simple step-by-step questionnaire, helping them to decide when it is appropriate to use RPE and to select the correct level of protection.

It also points out some common errors - such as the use of nuisance dust masks (also known as comfort or hygiene masks), which resemble RPE but do not have to meet health and safety standards.
