Firms take more responsibility for health and safety

More companies are reporting publicly on their health and safety performance and directing health and safety at board level, according to the Health and Safety Executive.

One survey (RR 134) found a significant increase in the number of the top UK companies publicly reporting on health and safety - from 47% in 2000 to 78% in 2002.

However, less than half actually reported on their performance and only a quarter set targets for improvements. Researchers also questioned the quality of reporting.

Another survey (RR 135) showed companies where health and safety is directed at board level has risen from 58% in 2001 to 66% in 2003.

However, researchers also found a variable level of workforce consultation, especially for the top 350 firms in the private sector. The researchers concluded that changes have taken place, but there is still room for improvement.
