Unions save fire safety regulations

Campaigning by rail and fire unions has persuaded the government to drop plans to scrap sub-surface station fire-safety regulations.

The original draft of the government's Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2004 would have repealed the 1989 regulations, which were brought in after the King's Cross fire in 1987.

But rail unions RMT and Aslef and firefighters' union FBU forced a rethink.
