Workplace stress - law and practice

Smita Jamdar and Jane Byford, The Law Society, 192 pages, £29.95

Work-related stress is still a key concern for trade unionists and one of the major reasons for time off sick. This guide by the Law Society, though aimed mainly at employers, is well written and contains valuable information for union safety reps.

It includes a useful chapter on the implications of the Court of Appeal decision in the case of Hatton v Sutherland.

The authors argue that the decision has made it more difficult for employees to bring successful stress-related personal injury claims.

The book includes advice on preventing stress, useful checklists that can be adapted by reps and handy tables on the law and relevant court cases.
