New mums lose jobs

New research has found that one in seven women lose their jobs while on maternity leave.

The research, published by the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC), sought the opinions of 1,000 women who had taken maternity leave during their careers. Four out of 10 the women said that their jobs had changed by the time they went back to work, while half of the women said that they had seen their hours reduced or been demoted.

The EOC said that, prior to the recession, around 30,000 women lost their jobs each year as a result of pregnancy and maternity leave, and the figures are thought to have climbed much higher since the recession.
