Mail privatisation is politically motivated

Royal Mail is a successful and modernising company and the coalition’s plans to privatise it are politically motivated, say the CWU communication workers’ union. It condemned the plans and vowed to fight the sell-off move by all possible means.

CWU general secretary Billy Hayes said: “Privatisation is old politics. It’s the failed politics of history which brought disruption to Britain’s utilities and railways and astronomical prices for consumers. Dangerously in this case, we fear the government may also be plotting to seize the pension assets.”

Royal Mail’s pension scheme has assets totalling around £26 billion at present.
