Ban bullying
UNISON public sector union stepped up its campaign against workplace bullies on Ban Bullying at Work Day this month (9 November). A UNISON survey showed that more than one third of 7,000 workers surveyed had experienced bullying in the last six months – double the number recorded in 1997. There was also evidence of extensive bullying of disabled workers (see news on p.7).
Workers listed rudeness, criticism, excessive work monitoring, intimidation, exclusion and withholding information as the top bullying behaviours. Respondents believed bullying was embedded in the workplace.
Dave Prentis, UNISON general secretary, said: “We will continue to campaign for specific legislation which will outlaw workplace bullying, ensure employers develop anti-bullying policies and aid bullied workers through employment tribunals.”
UNISON is campaigning for changes to the law through the Dignity at Work Bill.
