Industry fears new interest rate rise

The Bank of England warned in its latest Inflation Report that inflation

was expected to overshoot the government's target over the next two

years, raising fears that it was preparing the ground for an interest

rate rise this month.

This is despite last month's up-beat economic figures which led to calls

from industry for interest rates to be left on hold.

Articles of resistance

Paul Foot, Bookmarks, 319 pages, paperback, £14.99

Anyone who read the Daily Mirror between 1979 and 1993, The Guardian

since then, Private Eye or Socialist Worker, will need no introduction

to this selection of articles by Paul Foot.

Incisive, witty, well informed and animated by a desire to put right

injustice, praise those who fight against it, and make a persuasive case

for socialism, these writings are remarkably interesting and stimulating

to read.

This book is divided into six sections: heroes and heroines, cops and

robbers, sleaze, the Blair revolution, secrets and lies, and the system.

Paul Foot has been called the campaigning journalist of the 1990s.
