Union fights off derecognition attempt at JJB Sports

The GMB general union has fought off an attempt by JJB Sports to derecognise the union at the company’s Wigan distribution premises.

In July, JJB Sports applied to the Central Arbitration Committee (CAC) to approve a secret ballot with the aim of removing recognition from the GMB at the site, where the union represented 358 employees.

However, the CAC rejected the company’s evidence that a majority of the bargaining unit would be likely to favour an end to collective bargaining, and ruled that recognition remained in place.

Meanwhile the GMB has won a statutory recognition ballot at Princes distribution depot in Carlisle.
