Older workers learning by rail

A broad partnership between train operators, rail unions and Unionlearn has resulted in rail workers in the Midlands region gaining access to fully-funded and flexible IT apprenticeships.

The apprenticeships, aimed at relatively mature workers, already in employment. They offer the chance for workers, including train drivers and ticket office staff, to increase their IT skills and gain a Level 2 qualification at the end of a 13-month apprenticeship. And do it while on the job.

The scheme also addresses financial barriers to accessing courses that can cost around £1,600.
