Police Federation
Newly-elected chair of the Police Federation Steve White says the federation would have endorsed the independent review into the scandal-hit organisation even without the “strident approach“ of home secretary Theresa May at the organisation’s recent annual conference.
The review, led by Sir David Normington, had raised major concerns about the federation’s culture and accountability (see Labour Research, May 2014, page 7). It made a series of far-reaching recommendations, all of them accepted by the conference delegates.
In an unusually sharp speech, May warned delegates that, if they didn’t accept the reforms, the government would intervene. However, White said the commitment to transforming the organisation would have been made anyway.
