Sleep deprivation

The TUC has highlighted research showing that public sector workers are suffering from sleep deprivation as a result of their job.

The research, led by the University of Leeds, found that public sector workers, including those in education, health and local government were sleeping for an average of only six hours a night, rather than the NHS-recommended seven to eight hours. And the study found that a quarter of those working in social care suffered from dangerously low averages of five hours or less a night.

Dr Anna Weighall of the University of Leeds said that “work-life balance appears to be challenging for many, especially when it comes to maintaining their sleep”.
