LRD AGM will focus on the gig economy

The campaign for workers’ rights in the gig economy will be the main topic at the LRD annual general meeting on 15 May. Last year, the GMB general union won a key tribunal case against app-based car hire firm Uber. The tribunal judged that Uber drivers are not self-employed and should therefore have workers’ rights.

Uber is appealing. Meantime, the GMB is backing another case against national logistics company UK Express (which delivers parcels for Amazon) that raises similar issues. GMB national officer Mick Rix has been invited to address the AGM about the campaign.

As Maria Ludkin, GMB legal director, points out, this is a much wider issue than individual companies like UK Express or Uber.

“This is about employment in 21st century Britain,” she says. Fake self-employment is costing the Treasury and the economy millions while trapping some very hardworking people in in-work poverty.”

The AGM, which starts at 2.00pm, will be held at Jerwood Space, Union Street, London SE1 0LN.
