UK fails on rights of disabled people

The United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities has concluded that the current UK government has failed to take all appropriate measures to address "grave and systematic violations of the human rights" of disabled people.

A 2016 investigation by the UN found the UK was in breach of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities which the UK signed up to in 2007. The committee recently published its follow-up report to the 2016 findings, concluding that there had been "no progress since 2016".

TUC general secretary Paul Nowak said that the report "paints a damning picture of life in the UK for disabled people after 14 years of Tory rule.

"Ministers must act on this report and eliminate the root causes of inequality".
