Labour rights referendum

Italy’s largest union confederation, CGIL, has won growing support for its plan for a referendum on a key element of the country’s labour law. It is calling for the abolition of what is known as the "Jobs Act", which was one of a series of measures, introduced between 2014 and 2016, intended to liberalise the Italian labour market and create employment.

One of the most controversial of its provisions was the removal in most cases of the right to be reinstated where dismissal was found to be unjustified, replacing this right with financial compensation.

If CGIL is able to collect 500,000 signatures in favour of a referendum on the issue, and other technical conditions are met, a binding referendum must be held in 2025.
