Spain raises national minimum wage

The Spanish government has increased the national minimum wage by 8% to €1,080 a month. As it is paid 14 times a year (there is a double payment in the summer and at Christmas), someone on the minimum wage now receives €15,120 over 12 months. This is 60% of the average salary in Spain, the figure promised by the government in 2018.

The decision was announced by the head of the government, Pedro Sanchez, on 31 January, and it has been backdated to 1 January. It is higher than inflation, which was 5.8% in January.
