Compensation

The BMA medical union has won more than £3 million compensation for a doctor who was unfairly dismissed for whistleblowing.

Dr Rosalind Ranson was sacked as Isle of Man medical director after urging the Manx government to depart from Public Health England advice during the Covid pandemic.

She raised serious concerns about whether the then chief executive, who was not medically qualified, was passing on her advice to ministers, and about patient safety and governance issues.

It is the single largest win for a whistleblowing case for the BMA. The union said the sum reflects the “career damaging treatment” to Dr Ranson, the unreasonable way the Isle of Man health and social care department conducted the litigation, and included sums for aggravated and exemplary damages, which are exceptionally rare.
