Woman to lead largest union

A woman is set to be elected as the head of Germany’s largest union, the 2.15-million-member IG Metall, for the first time.

Christiane Benner, who is currently the union’s second president (equivalent to deputy general secretary), has been nominated to take over from the current first president, Jörg Hofmann, in October when the vote takes place at the union’s conference. But with the nomination from the union’s executive, Benner is almost certain to be chosen.
