Deliveroo quits

The main Dutch union confederation, the FNV, has welcomed the decision of the British food delivery company, Deliveroo, to pull out of the Netherlands. The company announced on 10 August that it would leave after making losses in “challenging market conditions”.

The FNV believes that the legal cases it won against the company also played “a major role in the decision to leave”.

In December 2021, in a case brought by the FNV, the appeal court upheld a ruling that Deliveroo should pay its couriers as employees rather than independent contractors. The Dutch supreme court is likely to back this judgment in a case due to be heard by the end of the year.
