Pay rise rejected
Polish unions representing workers across the public sector have expressed their shock at a proposed government pay increase of 7.8% for the around four million workers in the public sector announced last month.
The offer is well below the current level of inflation which was 13.9% in May.
The government expects that inflation will fall and that it will average 9.1% over the year, although other forecasters are less optimistic. The three main union confederations have called for a 20% pay increase.
