Deadly year for journalists

Last year was one of the deadliest years for journalists, according to the latest International Federation of Journalists’ annual Killed List.

One hundred and twenty-two journalists and media workers, including 14 women, were killed last year, just seven below the previous year. They included 64 Palestinian media professionals who made up more than half of all those killed globally.

At the end of 2024, 516 journalists were in prison, a sharp increase compared to 2023 (427) and 2022 (375). China was the worst offender, with 135 journalists jailed.
