Learning reps project supports creative workers

Freelance creative workers are set to get a boost to their learning opportunities thanks to four key unions in the sector and the Wales Union Learning Fund (WULF).

Twelve union learning reps (ULRs) have been appointed by CULT Cymru, a learning project led by entertainment union Bectu in partnership with actors' union Equity, the Musicians’ Union and the Writers’ Guild, and supported by WULF. The aim is for them to engage with union members to identify skill gaps and training needs of specific groups of creatives.

Their role will be to:

• help raise awareness of learning; • identify the learning needs of a particular group of workers; • collaborate with unions, employers and other stakeholders; • help organise formal and informal learning activities that are relevant, affordable and accessible; • organise peer-to-peer networks; and • signpost to other training providers/support organisations.

Pete Bayliss, one of the Musicians’ Union ULRs, said: “My goal as a ULR is to connect with musicians and producers of music, living or working in Wales and those interested in pursuing careers in the music industry … I want to discover what is needed to enhance and strengthen skills and well-being, enabling you to advance in your chosen careers.”

He plans to provide learning opportunities in Wales, including meet-ups at convenient times and locations, as well as online learning and, if there is sufficient demand, in-person courses.
