Greek Labour Bill
Greek workers took to the streets of Athens last month to protest against planned new employment legislation they say will increase working time and effectively abolish collective bargaining.
The Bill, presented for public consultation on 12 May, makes major changes to the current system, including the introduction of a digital work card for all employees and a loosening of working time rules that give employers discretion to impose a 45-hour week.
However, some of the most contentious proposals relate to new rules on unions — including union structures at local level — requiring them to register precise details of membership, officers and finances. Only registered unions will have a right to take part in collective bargaining.
