Safety plan for journalists

The NUJ journalists’ union has welcomed an updated national action plan for the safety of journalists.

In the plan, the government acknowledges the need for improved protection for journalists, and says it is taking action to tackle the wider issue of abuse by collaborating with the Meta and X social media giants to reduce exposure to harmful content.

The refreshed plan also recognises the rise in strategic lawsuits against public participation — brought against journalists to prevent publication, harass and intimidate.
