Union calls for staff to be brought in-house

Last month an RMT transport union protest called for an end to the outsourcing of safety critical track protection staff on the London Underground and for agency workers to be brought back in-house. The union wrote to London deputy mayor Seb Dance pointing to a “damning report” by the Rail Accidents Investigation Branch. This highlighted problems with London Underground’s use of agencies after a worker was struck by a train at Chalfont & Latimer in April 2022. An RMT survey also found 63% of “gig economy” track workers being used by London Underground would be unhappy about raising safety concerns for fear of not being offered future shifts.
