Counter-piracy post-Brexit

Maritime union Nautilus International has sought assurances from the UK government about its commitment to the protection of UK ships and seafarers post-Brexit.

The union is calling for the UK to remain a part of the European Union Naval Force’s counter-piracy operation after pirates attacked a British-registered chemical tanker off the east coast of Somalia last month.

A new report from the International Maritime Bureau’s piracy reporting centre shows that there were 141 incidents in the first nine months of 2016, including pirates armed with knives or guns taking 110 seafarers hostage and kidnapping 49 crew for ransom.
