Over-skilled and underpaid

More than one in three workers (37%) say they are over-skilled for the job they do, while one in eight (12%) feel they lack the skills they need, according to a survey of over 3,700 employees by the HR professionals’ body, the CIPD.

Young people were more likely than older ones to be either over-skilled (42%) or under-skilled (15%).

“Over-skilled” workers are less likely to be satisfied with their jobs than those whose skills are well matched with their jobs; likely to earn considerably less; and are much less likely to have been promoted.
