Joblessness rate falls

Unemployment was down by 46,000 to 1.43 million in the three-month period ending March 2018, the Labour Force Survey shows.

The fall helped cut the unemployment rate from 4.4% to 4.2%. The rate was last lower in April 1975.

In April, unemployment under the claimant count rose by 31,200 to 897,000. This only includes claimants receiving Jobseeker’s Allowance and those on the means-tested Universal Credit.
