Upturn in settlements to 2.6% in May
Collectively agreed pay settlement rises outpaced the rise in the cost of living in May and showed a small rise on the previous month’s figure, the latest data show.
May's 2.6% three-month median derived from the Labour Research Department’s Payline database of collective agreements was 0.2 percentage points higher than the 2.4% rise in inflation as measured by the Retail Prices Index.
Payline’s three-monthly rise for the whole economy had been constant at 2.5% since the start of the year until May’s small upturn.
For the private sector, the median rise edged up to 2.7% in May from 2.6% in April. In the public sector, the rise was steady at 1.0%. Manufacturing’s median was up to 2.7% from 2.6%, while the services sector rise was unchanged at 2.5%.
