The government has been accused of wasting millions as it backtracks over the selling off of the NHS Professionals staffing agency.
Plans to privatise the agency, which supplies doctors, nurses and other staff to hospitals at a cheaper rate than profit-making agencies, had been widely condemned in view of the current staffing crisis.
UNISON head of health Sara Gorton said that while the government had “at last seen sense”, ministers had, despite many warnings, undertaken “a pointless exercise, wasting millions of pounds of taxpayers cash”.
She added: “Instead of filling the pockets of management consultants, this money could have been better spent improving services for patients.”
