E-balloting

The TUC and the Lib Dems have agreed to work towards unions being able to ballot their members electronically. This follows a Lib Dem pledge to introduce e-balloting in their election manifesto.

Existing laws specify that balloting for industrial action and union elections must be done by postal vote. The Lib Dems say a small task force will consider how to implement e-balloting “in keeping with” current legislation.

TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady said: “It is time that union members had a proper choice of how they exercise their vote on important decisions in ways that preserve security and confidentiality, but boost turn-out and participation.”
